THE LONGMAN LANGUAGE EXERCISE ZONE
Work those linguistic muscles

Does your grammar need serious beefing up? Check out Longman's interactive test bank of exercises, designed to help students improve their grammar and writing skills. ExerciseZone contains 2,500 exercises in ten practice topics that most frequently give students difficulty including verb tenses, pronouns and sentence grammar.
GUIDE TO GRAMMAR AND WRITING
Charles Darling goes the whole hog

Finished the Longman exercises but not too sure why you were wrong? Look no further for a grammar guru. Eminently fatherly in his tone of voice, Professor Charles Daly walks you through everything you ever wanted to know about grammar and essay writing. An invaluable online reference.
WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS
Bill Daly's D-I-Y Essay Fundamentals

Not the most aesthetically appealing site we've seen but there's no denying that the guy knows his stuff. Heck, RJC links to this site as well, so that must count for something! A site which rewards the patient and persevering.
NUMBER TWO'S VOCAB BUILDER
Dynamically updated Vocab Assesments

Named after the 2B pencils so necessary for Optical Mark Sheet tests, Number Two's Vocabulary Builderis amazing for its personalized word lists that adapt to your ability level. Look up, too, their Daily Word feature and the help they offer for the SAT. Who said that there's no such thing as a free lunch anymore?
VISUAL THESAURUS
Eye candy that's also a feast for the mind

An experiment in interface and lanuage, Plumb Design's Visual Thesaurus pushes the web's ability to help us understand the relationships between wods and their meanings by displaying these as spatial maps. While its databank of words is considerably small, this one was just too beautiful to leave out. Good for a one-off visit.
QUOTELAND
No more Reader's Digest Quotes for me!

God gave some people the ability to say the right words at the right time. God gave us this website so that we'd have the ability to locate those words when we need them. One of the better quote collections out there (but also see Quote Garden), Quoteland comes equipped with a nifty search engine that works reasonably well. Do remember, that quotes are used sparingly at best in a GP essay.
PHRASE FINDER
"Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings" and other such come-agains

Books would probably be more comprehensive, but if you're online and need to look up the origin of a particular phrase or saying ("off with his head", "on a wing and a prayer") you might want to start here.
