Robotics Challenge 2005 – Preliminary Rounds (11 July – 23 July 2005)

Due to the large number of entries this year, we will be holding preliminary rounds for the East Zone Robotics Challenge, between 11 July to 23 July 2005 at the Technology Laboratory of the East Zone Science & Technology Centre @ VJC (Victoria Junior College, 20 Marine Vista). The top 40% of the teams from each category with the best scores will qualify to proceed to the finals on 29 July 2005. Here are the details:

  1. Each team will be allotted an initial time slot between 11 July and 15 July in the afternoon. Teams can arrive at the above venue at any time within the alloted time slot, and will be allowed to make their runs on a first-come-first-served basis, with the flexibility to mutually swop slots. There will be flexibility to adjust the dates based on each schools’ schedule – just email the organiser at kwek_eng_yeow@moe.edu.sg
  2. Please refer to the Robotics Challenge website for the schedule for the preliminary rounds, to check for your team’s time slot.
  3. Each team will be allowed a maximum of 3 attempts to achieve their best scores in the preliminary rounds during their allocated time slot between 11 July and 15 July, or on any subsequent date of their choice between 16 July and 23 July.
  4. Each team may wish to attempt their 3 tries during their one allocated session, or they may choose to book another date for their 2nd and 3rd attempts on any date between 16 July and 23 July, inclusive of Saturdays. This will allow teams to improve their robots to achieve better scores on their 2nd or 3rd attempts.
  5. Teams whose scores place them among the top 40% of all the teams in each of the three categories (Lego/Sec, Lego/Pri, Open) will qualify to enter the finals on 29 July 2005. This means, for example, that the top 15 teams out of the 36 teams in the Lego (Secondary) category will enter the finals.
  6. If more entries for the Challenge are received, the percentage of teams that qualify for the finals may be reduced from 40%.
  7. To qualify for the finals on 29 July, each team must have obtained at least one score by 23 July (Saturday). Teams which have not attempted or have failed to obtain at least one score by 23 July will be considered to have forfeited their entry into the Challenge and will not be allowed to enter the finals on 29 July.
  8. The latest scores achieved by all the teams in the preliminary rounds will be updated and shown on the Robotics Challenge website at the end of each day of the preliminary rounds, if not earlier.
  9. The results of the preliminary rounds, including the teams that qualify for the finals on 29 July, will be shown at the Robotics Challenge website after the preliminary rounds, on 23 July.
  10. There is flexibility with regards to the actual dates and times of the allocated slots for the preliminary rounds. Teams may freely swop slots with one another if their robot are not quite ready (for example) at the allocated time. The only important consideration is that each team be allowed to attempt to achieve the best score for their robot, whether in a single session, or in several sessions between 11 July and 23 July, up to a maximum of 3 attempts.
  11. All participants are allowed to visit the Technology Laboratory at the East Zone Science & Technology Centre to watch the preliminary rounds even if their robot is not making a scoring attempt, to keep track of the progress of the preliminary rounds.
  12. If you have any queries, please contact the organiser at the above email address or via handphone at 9698 3550. Thank you.
